The Amavasya of the Bhadrapada month. It holds supreme importance in Tantric worship. Mythology states that Goddess Kaushiki emerged from the cells of Goddess Parvati on this night to slay the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. It is also the night saint Bamakhepa attained enlightenment at Tarapith.
Intense devotional and Tantric worship of Goddess Tara or Kali takes place, particularly at Tarapith and other Shakti Peethas. Offerings include red hibiscus garlands, oil lamps, and specific Tantric offerings. Midnight fire sacrifices are central to the rituals.
A highly rigorous fast. Devotees observe a full-day fast, often waterless, and keep a night vigil. The fast is broken only after the midnight rituals and Pushpanjali are entirely completed.
Nishita Kaal (exact midnight hours) of the Amavasya tithi.
