The Amavasya of the Margashirsha month. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna declares 'Among the months, I am Margashirsha.' Hence this new moon day is exceptionally sacred, an ideal day for performing Tarpan and Shraddha.
Devotees bathe in holy rivers at dawn and perform Tarpan for their departed ancestors. This is followed by prayers to Lord Vishnu and the Sun God. Donating wheat flour, rice, or warm clothing to the poor brings blessings.
Those performing Tarpan abstain from food and water until their holy bath and ancestral offerings are fully completed. A Sattvic diet is maintained throughout the day.
Early morning hours of the Amavasya tithi, ideal for bath and Tarpan.
