Itu Puja / Itu Brata

22 November 2026

Significance

Observed every Sunday of the Agrahayana month. The word 'Itu' is derived from Mitra, the Sun God. Married women and young girls observe this month-long vow for the health, prosperity, and happiness of their families. This entry marks the first Sunday's observance; the ritual repeats on subsequent Sundays through the month, ending with immersion on Sankranti.

Rituals & Customs

Five types of seeds are sown in an earthen pot filled with soil. The seedlings are watered and worshipped every Sunday. On the last day of the month, the pot is immersed in a river or pond.

Fasting Rules

Women observe a fast every Sunday morning until the puja is completed, breaking it with a Sattvic vegetarian meal.

Auspicious Timing

Morning to forenoon on the Sundays of Agrahayan, and the Sankranti day for immersion.
