Celebrated on the Sankranti of the Bhadra month (Sun entering Kanya), dedicated to Lord Vishwakarma, the divine architect and engineer of the gods. Unlike most Hindu festivals based on the lunar calendar, this follows the solar calendar. In Bengal it is also highly associated with kite-flying.
Workplaces, factories, tools, machinery, and vehicles are cleaned and worshipped. Tools are adorned with sandalwood paste, vermilion, and flowers. It is forbidden to operate machinery for regular work on this day. Offerings include fruits, sweets, and Khichuri.
As an industrial and community festival, strict fasting is not mandated for the general public. However, the business owner or the person officially performing the puja fasts until the Pushpanjali is offered.
