Observed on the Phalguna Ekadashi. 'Vijaya' translates to victory. According to the Ramayana, when Lord Rama was unable to cross the ocean to reach Lanka, sage Bakadalabhya advised him to observe this fast. He observed it, crossed the ocean, and achieved victory over Ravana. It is observed to overcome severe obstacles.
Lord Rama and Lord Vishnu are worshipped. A Kalash is established and an idol or image of Lord Rama is placed over it. Offerings include flowers, sandalwood paste, Tulsi leaves, and Panchamrit.
Standard Ekadashi fasting rules apply strictly. Abstinence from all grains, cereals, and rice is required. The fast begins the previous night and is broken (Paran) on Dwadashi morning.
