Significance

Observed on the Krishna Ekadashi of the Margashirsha month. 'Utpanna' translates to 'born'. Mythology states that when the demon Mur tried to kill a sleeping Lord Vishnu, a Goddess emerged from Vishnu's body and slayed the demon; Vishnu named her Ekadashi. This day marks the birth of Goddess Ekadashi herself.

Rituals & Customs

Lord Vishnu is worshipped. The deity is offered incense, lamps, flowers, sandalwood paste, and Tulsi leaves. Reading the Utpanna Ekadashi Vrat Katha is highly auspicious.

Fasting Rules

Standard Ekadashi fasting rules apply strictly. Abstinence from all grains, cereals, and rice is required. The fast begins the previous night and is broken (Paran) on Dwadashi morning.
