Somvati Amavasya

Significance

Any Amavasya that falls on a Monday is revered as Somvati Amavasya. It is considered a rare and highly auspicious alignment. Offering prayers to ancestors and worshipping Lord Shiva on this day grants great spiritual merit. In 2026 this coincides with the conclusion of Adhik Maas.

Rituals & Customs

Devotees take a holy dip in sacred rivers at dawn and perform Tarpan for their ancestors. This is followed by offering water and Bel leaves to the Shiva Linga. Women worship the Peepal tree, circumambulating it 108 times with a sacred thread.

Fasting Rules

Devotees seeking specific blessings observe a fast or maintain a strict Sattvic diet. Consuming food or water is avoided until the morning bath and ancestral offerings are completed.

Early morning hours during the Amavasya tithi (for the holy bath and Tarpan).
