The Purnima of the Jyeshtha month, celebrated as the appearance day of Lord Jagannath. It is a vital prelude to the Rath Yatra festival.
The deities of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are brought out of the inner sanctum and bathed publicly with 108 pots of sacred herb-infused water. Following this bath, the deities traditionally fall ill for 15 days (Anavasara), kept away from public view and offered only medicinal herbs and fruit juices.
There is no strict fast for the general public. Devotees usually maintain a Sattvic diet and wait until the deities are bathed and the initial offerings are made before eating their midday meal.
