Shravana Purnima / Raksha Bandhan (Upakarma)

27 August 2026

Significance

The Purnima of the Shravana month, universally celebrated as Raksha Bandhan, honouring the bond between brothers and sisters. It is also significant for Brahmins, who perform Upakarma — the annual ritual of changing their sacred thread.

Rituals & Customs

Sisters tie a sacred thread around their brothers' wrists, praying for their longevity, and feed them sweets. Brothers pledge to protect their sisters. Brahmins take a holy bath and chant Vedic mantras to discard their old sacred thread and wear a new one.

Fasting Rules

Sisters fast until they have tied the Rakhi on their brother's wrist. Brahmins performing Upakarma observe a strict waterless fast until the thread-changing ceremony is completed.

Auspicious Timing

Throughout the auspicious periods of the Purnima tithi, avoiding the inauspicious Bhadra Kaal window for tying Rakhi.
