Significance

Observed on the Krishna Ekadashi of the Magh month. 'Shat' means six and 'Tila' means sesame seeds. The scriptures mandate the use of sesame seeds in six different ways on this day, which is believed to destroy all sins and eliminate poverty.

Rituals & Customs

Lord Vishnu is worshipped. The six uses of sesame are: bathing in sesame-mixed water, applying sesame paste on the body, using sesame in Homa, drinking sesame-infused water, donating sesame, and consuming sesame as prasad.

Fasting Rules

Standard Ekadashi fasting rules apply. Abstinence from grains and cereals is required. Sesame seeds are the only exception and are heavily used. The fast is broken (Paran) on Dwadashi morning.

Throughout the Ekadashi tithi, with a specific window for Paran on Dwadashi morning.
