11 October 2026

Significance

The first day of Sharadiya Navaratri, the autumn Navaratri leading into Durga Puja. Over nine continuous nights, devotees worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga. This entry marks the Ghat Sthapana that begins the observance; the notable later days — Maha Ashtami, Sandhi Puja, and Bijaya Dashami — are recorded separately.

Rituals & Customs

The festival begins with Ghat Sthapana. Each day is dedicated to a specific form of the Goddess. Reciting the Durga Saptashati is mandatory, and Kumari Puja is prominent on Ashtami.

Fasting Rules

Devotees observe strict fasting for the nine days, abstaining from grains, cereals, onions, garlic, and non-vegetarian food. The fast concludes on Navami or the morning of Dashami.
