Significance

The Purnima of the Kartik month. In Vaishnava tradition, it celebrates the divine Rash Leela of Lord Krishna and the Gopis in Vrindavan. In Bengal, especially Nabadwip, it is also famous for Shakta Rash. It is also called Tripurari Purnima, marking Lord Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura.

Rituals & Customs

Deities of Radha-Krishna are placed in a rotating Rash Chakra or grand pavilions, accompanied by continuous Kirtans. Devotees light oil lamps and set them afloat in holy rivers or ponds during the evening.

Fasting Rules

Being a grand festival, strict fasting is not imposed on the masses. The priests or main worshippers fast until the evening rituals are completed.
