The first day of the Bengali solar calendar. It is a universal cultural festival marking the Bengali New Year. Historically tied to the agricultural tax cycle, it now serves as the beginning of the new financial year for Bengali businesses.
People bathe early and wear new traditional clothes. Household deities are worshipped and devotees visit temples. Business owners worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi to open their new accounting ledgers (Hal Khata). Touching the feet of elders and distributing sweets are central traditions.
There is no standard fasting rule. However, business owners generally fast until the Hal Khata puja is completed in the morning.
The entire day is auspicious, with morning hours designated for Hal Khata rituals.
