Significance

The Purnima of the Pausha month. According to mythology, during a 100-year drought, Goddess Durga incarnated as Shakambhari and produced vegetables and fruits from her own body to save the world from starvation. It also marks the beginning of the month-long Magh Snan at Prayagraj.

Rituals & Customs

Taking a holy dip in a river at dawn is highly auspicious. Devotees worship Goddess Shakambhari and the Sun God. The Goddess is uniquely offered fresh vegetables, greens, and fruits. Donating raw vegetables and food to the needy is a primary ritual.

Fasting Rules

Devotees fast or maintain a strict Sattvic diet from the morning until the holy bath, puja, and charity are completed.

Dawn and early morning hours during the Purnima tithi.
