Observed on the Shukla Ekadashi of the Bhadrapada month. During Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu is in Yoganidra. It is believed that on this tithi he shifts his sleeping position on Shesha Naga. Observing this fast yields spiritual merit equivalent to a Vajapeya Yajna.
Lord Vishnu is worshipped specifically in his Vamana avatar. The deity is offered Panchamrit, flowers, sandalwood paste, and Tulsi leaves. Lighting lamps in a Vishnu temple and donating food or clothes is highly auspicious.
Standard Ekadashi fasting rules apply strictly. Abstinence from all grains, cereals, and rice is required. The fast begins the previous night and is broken (Paran) on Dwadashi morning.
