The Amavasya of the Magh month. It emphasises the practice of Maun (absolute silence) like an ascetic. Taking a holy dip in the Ganges or Triveni Sangam on this day is believed to wash away all sins and elevate the soul.
Devotees take a holy bath in sacred rivers at dawn. Following the bath, worshipping Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, and donating sesame seeds, food, and winter clothing to the needy yields immense spiritual merit.
Devotees observe a vow of complete silence (Maun Vrat) along with physical fasting. The silence and the fast are broken only after completing the bath, puja, and charitable donations.
Early morning hours during the Amavasya tithi (for the holy bath).
