This day marks the end of Pitri Paksha and the dawn of Devi Paksha. It is the day to pay homage to departed ancestors. In Bengal, waking at dawn to listen to the traditional Mahishasuramardini radio broadcast unofficially begins the Durga Puja festivities.
The primary ritual is Tarpan — offering water mixed with black sesame seeds and Kusha grass to ancestors at a riverbank. Devotees also read the Sri Sri Chandi at home.
The person performing Tarpan observes strict abstinence from the previous night and maintains a waterless fast in the morning until the Tarpan ritual is fully completed. The rest of the day is spent on a strict Sattvic diet.
Early morning / sunrise hours during the active Amavasya tithi.
