Maha Shivratri

15 February 2026

Significance

Celebrated on the Chaturdashi of the dark fortnight in the month of Phalguna. It commemorates the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Devotees observe this great night of Shiva to seek spiritual awakening and the fulfillment of their wishes.

Rituals & Customs

The Shiva Linga is ceremonially bathed with Panchamrit (milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and Ganga water). Lord Shiva is offered flawless Bel leaves (Bilva Patra), Akanda flowers, Datura, and sandalwood paste. Devotees traditionally stay awake all night, performing pujas across the four Prahars of the night.

Fasting Rules

A highly rigorous fast. Devotees consume a pure vegetarian meal the day before. On Shivratri, a 24-hour fast is observed (either strictly waterless or with milk and fruits). The fast is broken (Paran) the following morning after sunrise and after offering the final water to the Shiva Linga.

Auspicious Timing

Nishita Kaal (midnight) and the four specific Prahars of the night during the Chaturdashi tithi.
