Maha Saptami

17 October 2026

Significance

The Shukla Saptami of the Ashwin month. It is the first day of the core Durga Puja. On this day life is symbolically infused into the clay idol (Pran Pratishtha), and the Navapatrika (Kola Bou) — representing nine forms of the Goddess through nine plants — is deeply revered.

Rituals & Customs

At dawn the Navapatrika is taken to the Ganges or a nearby water body for a holy bath. It is then draped in a red-bordered white sari and placed to the right of Lord Ganesha. Following the Chokkhu Daan (painting the eyes to infuse life), the elaborate Maha Saptami puja begins.

Fasting Rules

Devotees wishing to offer Pushpanjali observe a strict waterless fast in the morning until the Anjali is successfully offered to the Goddess.

Auspicious Timing

Early morning hours of the Saptami tithi for the Navapatrika bath.
