The Shukla Navami of the Ashwin month. This is the final day of the core Durga Puja. According to mythology, this is the exact day Goddess Durga definitively defeated the buffalo demon Mahishasura, making it a day of ultimate triumph of good over evil.
The Goddess is worshipped as Mahishasuramardini. Performing a Homa (fire sacrifice) is mandatory on this day to conclude the rituals and seek forgiveness for any errors during the puja. Kumari Puja is also prominent on this day in many ashrams.
Those observing the Navami fast or participating in the Homa abstain from food until the fire sacrifice is completed. Morning Pushpanjali rules remain the same as previous days.
