Kojagari Lakshmi Puja

25 October 2026

Significance

Performed on the full moon night following Durga Puja. 'Kojagari' translates to 'who is awake?'. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi descends to earth on this night and blesses those who stay awake and worship her with wealth, peace, and prosperity.

Rituals & Customs

Homes are decorated with Alpona (rice paste art), especially depicting the footprints of the Goddess. A Kalash is set up with a coconut and mango leaves. Offerings typically include coconut laddoos, puffed rice, flattened rice, and Khichuri bhog. Reading the Lakshmi Panchali is mandatory.

Fasting Rules

Devotees observe a fast throughout the day, breaking it only after offering Pushpanjali in the evening. Some observe a partial fast, consuming only fruits and sweets during the day before having the main prasad at night.

Auspicious Timing

Pradosh Kaal and Nishita Kaal (evening and midnight hours during the active Purnima tithi).
