Jyeshtha Amavasya / Shani Jayanti

16 May 2026

Significance

The Amavasya of the Jyeshtha month, revered as Shani Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Shani (the God of Justice and Karma), born to the Sun God and Goddess Chhaya. Worshipping him on this day neutralises the malefic effects of Sade Sati or Dhaiya in one's astrological chart.

Rituals & Customs

Devotees visit Shani temples and offer mustard oil, black sesame seeds, black cloth, and blue flowers. Donating black umbrellas, footwear, or iron items to the poor brings relief from karmic debts. Being an Amavasya, Tarpan for ancestors is also performed.

Fasting Rules

Devotees observing the Shani Jayanti fast abstain from food throughout the day. The fast is broken in the evening, strictly with a Sattvic, salt-free meal after the puja is completed.

Auspicious Timing

Morning to evening during the Amavasya tithi.
