Significance

Observed on the Krishna Ashtami (associated with the Rohini Nakshatra) of the Bhadrapada month. It is one of the most prominent Hindu festivals, marking the birth of Lord Krishna in the dungeons of Mathura to end the tyrannical rule of King Kansa. It symbolizes the destruction of evil and the rise of Dharma.

Rituals & Customs

The idol of baby Krishna (Laddu Gopal) or Radha-Krishna is bathed with milk, yogurt, ghee, and honey. Special pujas, blowing of the conch, and Aarti take place precisely at midnight. Offerings of butter, rock sugar, and Tal-er Bora (palm fritters) are mandatory in Bengal.

Fasting Rules

Devotees observe a strict full-day fast (often waterless). The fast is broken with prasad only after the midnight birth rituals and puja are completely finished.
