Observed on the Shukla Shasthi of the Jyeshtha month, dedicated to Goddess Shasthi, the protector of children. Mothers-in-law observe this day to pray for the longevity, prosperity, and well-being of their daughters and sons-in-law.
After worshipping Goddess Shasthi, the mother-in-law blesses the son-in-law using a hand fan made of palm leaves. She touches a sacred yellow thread with paddy and durva grass to his forehead, then ties it around his wrist. This is followed by a grand feast featuring fish preparations and sweets.
The mother-in-law observes a fast from the morning until the blessing rituals and the Shasthi puja are completed. She breaks her fast with fruits or prasad afterward.
Morning to forenoon of the Shukla Shasthi tithi.
