Guru Purnima / Vyasa Purnima

Significance

Observed on the Purnima of the Ashadha month. It is a day dedicated to honouring one's spiritual and academic Gurus. It also commemorates the birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa, the sage who authored the Mahabharata and compiled the Vedas.

Rituals & Customs

Disciples visit their Gurus, ceremonially wash their feet, and offer flowers, garments, and Dakshina. Those without a formal living Guru worship Lord Shiva (the Adi Guru) or sage Veda Vyasa.

Fasting Rules

Fasting is not mandatory. However, devout disciples abstain from eating until they have offered their prayers and respects to their Guru. A pure vegetarian diet is maintained.

Morning through afternoon during the Purnima tithi.
