Observed on the Shukla Dashami of the Jyeshtha month. It marks the day the holy river Ganga descended from heaven to earth in response to King Bhagiratha's penance. 'Dashahara' translates to the destroyer of ten sins. Bathing in the Ganges on this day absolves ten physical, verbal, and mental sins.
Taking a holy dip in the Ganges or any sacred river at dawn is highly auspicious. Devotees worship Goddess Ganga with offerings of flowers, earthen lamps, and sweets. Witnessing the Ganga Aarti and donating water, umbrellas, or footwear brings spiritual merit.
There is no strict universal fast. Devotees maintain a pure Sattvic diet after completing their holy bath and prayers.
Early morning hours of the Dashami tithi (for the holy bath).
