Significance

Celebrated on the Shukla Shashthi of the Kartik month. It is dedicated to the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya, thanking them for sustaining life on earth. Though originating in Bihar and UP, it is widely observed across water bodies in Bengal today.

Rituals & Customs

Devotees stand waist-deep in a river or pond to offer Arghya to the setting and rising sun. Traditional bamboo baskets are filled with offerings like Thekua, sugarcane, coconuts, and seasonal fruits.

Fasting Rules

An extremely rigorous 36-hour waterless fast. It begins after the evening meal on Panchami and continues continuously until the final morning Arghya is offered to the rising sun on Saptami.

Auspicious Timing

Sunset on Shashthi tithi (Sandhya Arghya) and sunrise on Saptami tithi (Usha Arghya).
