The first day of Chaitra Navaratri, the spring Navaratri. Over nine continuous nights, devotees worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga (Navadurga). The festival concludes with Ram Navami. This entry marks the Ghat Sthapana (installing the sacred pot) which begins the observance.
The festival begins with Ghat Sthapana (installing the sacred pot). Each day is dedicated to a specific form of the Goddess. Reciting the Durga Saptashati (Chandi Path) is mandatory. Kumari Puja is prominent on Ashtami.
Devotees observe strict fasting for nine days, abstaining from grains, cereals, onions, garlic, and non-vegetarian food. Many survive only on fruits and milk. The fast concludes on Navami or the morning of Dashami.
