The Purnima of the Vaishakha month. It is incredibly auspicious as it marks three major events in the life of Gautama Buddha: his birth, his enlightenment, and his Mahaparinirvana (death). In the Hindu tradition, it also marks Kurma Jayanti, the appearance of Lord Vishnu's tortoise avatar.
Devotees pour water over the statue of Buddha and offer flowers. Taking a dip in a holy river and engaging in charity is highly recommended. Many Hindu households organize a Satyanarayan Puja on this day.
There is no mandatory strict fast. Devotees consume a pure Sattvic diet, and those hosting a Satyanarayan Puja fast until the Katha and Aarti are completed.
Morning to evening during the Purnima tithi.
