Significance

The Krishna Chaturdashi of the Kartik month, the day before Kali Puja. It is believed that on this night, the souls of 14 generations of ancestors descend to earth. The rituals are performed to honour them and to ward off evil spirits from the household.

Rituals & Customs

14 earthen oil lamps are lit around the house in the evening to dispel darkness and guide the ancestral souls. Consuming a preparation of 14 different leafy greens during lunch is a mandatory Bengali tradition believed to boost immunity.

Fasting Rules

There is no fasting on this day. Eating the 14-leafy-green preparation during lunch is required.
