Observed on the Shukla Dwitiya of the Kartik month, two days after Kali Puja. Mythology states that Lord Yama visited his sister Yamuna on this day and she marked his forehead for his long life. Sisters observe this day to pray for their brothers' longevity and protection.
Sisters apply a holy mark of ghee, sandalwood, and kohl on their brothers' foreheads, reciting a traditional Bengali rhyme. Sisters bless their brothers with paddy and durva grass, followed by an elaborate feast. Brothers present gifts in return.
Sisters observe a strict waterless fast from the morning until they have applied the Phonta on their brother's forehead.
Morning to forenoon during the auspicious lagna of the Dwitiya tithi.
