Observed on the Krishna Trayodashi of the Chaitra month. When aligned with the Shatabhisha Nakshatra it creates a highly auspicious Maha Baruni Yoga. It is believed that bathing in the Ganges on this day purifies the soul of all past sins and grants liberation.
Devotees gather at dawn to take a holy dip in the Ganges or other sacred rivers. After the bath, prayers are offered to the Sun God and Varuna, the God of Water. Performing Tarpan for ancestors and donating food and clothes are key rituals.
Devotees abstain from consuming any food or water until they have completed their holy bath and charitable acts in the morning.
Early morning hours of the Trayodashi tithi.
