Ambubachi begins when the Sun enters the Ardra Nakshatra in the Ashadha month, and ends after three days. It is the period when Mother Earth is believed to undergo her annual menstrual cycle, rejuvenating for the agricultural season. It draws millions of devotees to the Kamakhya Temple in Assam.
For three days, digging the earth, plowing, sowing seeds, and all auspicious ceremonies are strictly forbidden. Household deities are covered with a red cloth and daily worship is paused.
There is no universal fast, but strict observers (traditionally widows and ascetics) refrain from eating hot cooked meals or lighting a fire for cooking during these three days.
