Observed on the Krishna Ekadashi of the Bhadrapada month. According to scriptures, the truthful King Harishchandra lost his kingdom and family, and by observing this fast upon Sage Gautam's advice, he regained his lost glory. This fast destroys past sins and restores lost honour.
Lord Vishnu, specifically his Hrishikesh form, is worshipped. The deity is offered incense, lamps, flowers, sandalwood paste, and Tulsi leaves. Listening to the story of King Harishchandra on this day is highly beneficial.
Standard Ekadashi fasting rules apply strictly. Abstinence from all grains, cereals, and rice is required. The fast begins the previous night and is broken (Paran) on Dwadashi morning.
